FREETOWN INNOVATION LAB designs small hydro solutions, made from recycled materials, tailored for rural communities. The HYDRO SPOON GENERATORS are installed in rivers, streams, and dams with high-velocity water flow, capable of generating up to 10KW of electricity.
By converting natural water flow into renewable energy, this systems provide reliable electricity to households, schools, and businesses in off-grid areas. During the day, the power supports productive uses such as milling, refrigeration, and irrigation, while at night it lights homes and streets, improving safety and quality of life. Importantly, this approach reduces dependence on fossil fuels, cuts carbon emissions, and creates local jobs through fabrication, installation, and maintenance.

FREETOWN INNOVATION LAB is tackling the energy access challenge through the design and installation of small-scale hydropower systems tailored for rural communities. Using locally sourced materials,including turbines fabricated from scrap yard items such as table spoons and other recycled components,we create affordable, community-based power systems.

Across Africa, more than 700 million people still go to bed without access to electricity, with rural and remote communities disproportionately affected. In Sierra Leone, most of these communities remain disconnected to the national grid, forcing them to live in darkness.
This lack of reliable power undermines every sector of development, healthcare facilities cannot operate effectively, schools struggle without lighting, farm productivity is limited, small businesses are restricted and families continue to depend on unsafe, polluting fuels. Energy poverty remains a major barrier to inclusive growth.
