FEMALE INNOVATION LAB

EQUITY DEVELOPMENT THROUGH

TRAINING & CAPACITY BUILDING

The SOL CHARGE initiative laid the corner stone for the FEMALE INNOVATION LAB & THE FREETWON INNOVATION LAB, and marked the inception of an incubator, that turns necessity and lack into innovative power. Born in the aftermath of the Freetown Mud-& landslide, where many people, among them young women, lost their families and homes, the eminent need for survival, resulted in the SOL CHARGE project. Training women to build SOLAR POWERED MOBILE PHONE CHARGING STATIONS set the women up as sovereign entrepreneurs, while bringing electricity to remote villages, impacting hundreds of people, who used to travel miles just to charge their phones.

direct impact

The young women who had lost their families and homes in the mudslide, were trained to built solar powered mobile phone charging stations. The stations were portable and could be installed anywhere “under the sun”. This allowed these charging stations to be installed in very remote villages, where villagers had to travel miles to charge their phones.

The women became sovereign entrepreneurs, generating revenue, while brining a solution to remote locations that impacted hundreds of people at a time.

The female entrepreneurs in turn inspired other young girls to become like them and learn how to build their own Mobile Phone SOL-CHARGE-STATION or to become solar technicians.
